St. Louis City SC recently notified fan groups that some displays used in supporter sections in the past, specifically Black Lives Matter flags and a 'Love Always Wins' transgender-rights banner, will be restricted during home matches this season. Team officials communicated this to representatives of several supporter groups during a season kickoff meeting held last Wednesday, according to members of those groups. The decision was made due to a new interpretation of policies, which deemed some items previously allowed season-long in the stadium as 'no longer approved.' Sam Wise, co-founder of the Fleur de Noise fan group, stated that the restriction directly impacted a trans-rights banner and a standard Black Lives Matter flag, both of which had been hung in the front row of their section all three seasons prior. The code of conduct, which has been in place since the team's inaugural match, prohibits 'signs, symbols or images for commercial purposes or for electioneering, campaigning, or advocating for or against any candidate, political party, legislative issues or government action.' The interpretation of this code has been clarified to ensure consistency across all supporter groups and align with Major League Soccer policies on stadium signage. Wise argued that the displays reflect diversity and underserved communities of their members and Greater St. Louis, rather than a political agenda or a potential violation of the team's Code of Conduct. The club officials clarified that general Pride flags are still permitted, but some displays for specific subgroups are no longer approved for season-long use. The recent communications between the team and fan groups follow an incident last season during which one man with a ticket to a July home match was asked to leave Energizer Park for wearing a Make America Great Again hat. The rules discussed only apply to the use of Black Lives Matter flags and the 'Love Always Wins' transgender-rights banner during most matches, though they may be allowed during celebrations such as Black History Month, Juneteenth or Pride Night.
